Hackberry is an unincorporated community of roughly 926 residents in Cameron Parish, closer to Lake Charles than any other community in the parish. The area is shaped by lakes, streams, bayous, and chênières — oak-covered coastal ridges the parish is named for. Hackberry was heavily damaged by Hurricane Rita in 2005 and again by Hurricane Ike in 2008, when a 22-foot storm surge reached 60 miles inland.
