Despite being the parish's largest community, Grand Lake has weathered the same hurricane history as the rest of Cameron Parish. In January 2010, then-Vice President Joe Biden visited Grand Lake for the ribbon-cutting of the Grand Lake Elderly Apartments — a 30-unit income-based housing project and, at the time, the only housing rebuilt in that part of the parish since Hurricanes Rita and Ike.
